Missed JSM tactics

In addition to endgame misses, there were naturally many tactical misses in the JSM games during the last weekend. Here are two examples.

Can Black trap White's queen?

The game continued 7...Bd7 8.Qa5 and Black had a small advantage (Samu Heikkilä – Tommi Laaksovuori).

However, Black would have trapped White's queen with 7...c6! 8.Qxc6+ Bd7.

What is White's best move?

▶ Solution

The game continued 17.Bg3 and White had a small advantage (Esa Kokko – Per Ertbjerg).

However, White would have won another pawn with 17.Bxg7! because the bishop cannot be taken: 17...Kxg7?? 18.Ne6+ followed by 19.Qg7#.
