I would play nice combinations if I only were able to get into those positions. Sure. After an exciting game that I played last week with standard time control, Houdini found as many as three excellent sacrificial combinations that I had missed.
What is Black's quickest win in the following positions?
(The first two are quite difficult, but the last one I definitely should have found.)
Solution
The target is the weak f1 square: 47...Rdf6!! 48.Kh2 (48.Qxd5? Rf1+ 49.Rxf1 e2+) Rf2! 49.Qxd5 Bc7+ 50.Kg1 e2 winning.
Alternatively, 47...Nf4 48.Bxe3 Re6 also wins easily.
Solution
The key is to open the d-file for the rook: 49...Ne3!! 50.Qxe3 Bb6 or 50.Bxe3 Rd1 51.Bf2 Rxe1+ 52.Bxe1 Rf1#.
Alternatively, 49...Nf4 50.Bxf4 gxf4 also wins, but not as quickly.
Solution
54...Rc4! wins because White's queen cannot escape from the discovered check; for example, 55.Qxc4 Rc6+.
